THE European Union (EU) has hailed Zimbabwe for becoming the first country under the global spotlight initiative to develop a multi-sectorial High-level Political Compact (HLPC) that is dedicated to address gender-based violence (GBV) and harmful practices.

The HLPC was launched last year.

EU Ambassador to Zimbabwe Jobst von Kirchmann said Zimbabwe has to be lauded for its goal to eradicate GBV by 2030.

“In the name of the European Union, I would like to reiterate its congratulations to His Excellency President Emmerson Mnangagwa for his commitment to the goal of eradicating all forms of gender-based violence and harmful practices by 2030,” he said.

“That commitment is still firm and relentless one year later, and the work continues on the ground with the six UN implementing agencies and civil society organisations. Our recognition and gratitude also to those actually on the ground.”

Addressing journalists on Thursday, Minister of Women Affairs, Community, Small and Medium Enterprises Development,Dr Sithembiso Nyoni said the HLPC is a commitment to a shared responsibility among all stakeholders in the country.

“The signing of the strategic document signified the commitment of all parties to pursue the peace agenda through the elimination of all forms of violence against women and girls,” said Dr Nyoni.

“The responsibilities bestowed upon each stakeholder are not for window-dressing, but they are obligations that need to be taken seriously to ensure everyone plays a leading role in accomplishing them.”
