HARARE has started working on the construction of new markets for informal traders, with authorities proposing modern markets such as the recently commissioned Kudzanai Bus Terminus in Gweru.

Addressing media on the recent demolitions of illegal structures and cessation of the activities of space barons in Mbare, Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution responsible for Harare Metropolitan Province, Engineer Oliver Chidawu, said identification of areas where traders can be relocated had started.

“To this end we are liaising with the Harare City Council to identify new areas where traders can be relocated, and have a mutually beneficial working arrangement with the local authority,” he said.

“In this regard, I would suggest that Harare City Council consider the model that resulted in the construction of Kudzanai Bus Terminus in Gweru, which was commissioned by His Excellency President Mnangagwa, as an option.

“There are other options that we are currently discussing with the Harare City Council. Furthermore, we are going to open the Mupedzanhamo informal traders’ market shortly.”
