A CARETAKER has been arrested after he recently ransacked a house that he was supposed to keep safe, and stole property worth over US$25 000.

Ashley Bolgia Chiuya (28) from Belgravia, Harare – and his accomplices who are still at large – is facing charges of theft of trust property as defined in Section 113 (2)(d) of Criminal Law (Codification and Reform) Act (Chapter 09:23).

He appeared before Harare magistrate, Mr Yeukai Dzuda, facing two counts of theft.

On his second count, he maliciously damaged property as defined in Section 140 of the same law.

He was remanded in custody, and advised to apply for bail at the High Court of Zimbabwe.

Prosecutor, Mr Thomas Chanakira, told the court that between October 2021 to January 5, 2022, the accused person and accomplices took advantage of the absence of the house owner (the complainant) and stormed the house.

“They detached the house window frames, roof sheets, house doors, house electrical sockets, balcony mirrors, two geysers, sewer, and water metals pipes, florescent lights, fitted wardrobes, kitchen units, bathtub, taps and toilet tanks and electrical cables, 200 chairs, 20 tables, manual lawn mower, and wheelbarrow. The accused sold the above-mentioned property to different clients,” outlined the prosecutor.

Mr Chanakira added that during the same period, the accused person also damaged the swimming pool filtering and pumping system and unmounted a cable that connects electricity to the cottage.

The total value of goods stolen is US$25 000, while the value of the damaged property is US$6 000.

Only US$1 700 was recovered.
