A 42-year-old man has been jailed for a year by a Harare court for robbery.

Mike Manuwere appeared before magistrate Mrs Yeukai Dzuda and was sentenced to two years’ imprisonment, with a year suspended on condition of good behaviour.

The State successfully proved that on December 24, 2022, at around 7am, the complainant was at Sam Levy’s Village looking for transport to go to work.

She then boarded a white motor vehicle, which had four male passengers.

As soon as the complainant got into the vehicle, the driver locked the doors.

Manuwere and his accomplices, who are still at large, drove along Borrowdale Road, due South, and subsequently turned left into Kingsmead Road, due East, and right into Chilsom Road, Ballantyne Park, Harare.

Manuwere, who was seated next to the complainant, grabbed the victim by the neck and forced her to put her head between his legs.

After assaulting her with open hands, demanding cash and other valuables, he forcibly took her handbag – which had more than US$6 260 in cash, a charcoal grey Techno cell phone, and 119 x 20-litre PUMA diesel coupons –  and gave it to his accomplice, who was occupying the front seat next to the driver.

After taking the complainant’s valuables, they pushed her out of the vehicle and sped away.

The complainant sustained some bruises all over her body.

She managed to capture the car’s registration number, which led to the arrest of the accused.
