PROMOTERS of the boxing show in which boxer, Taurai Zimunya, died after succumbing to head injuries sustained in one of the fights, have spoken out about the tragedy, hailing the late pugilist as a “potential world champion.”

Zimunya died at Parirenyatwa Hospital, a few hours after he was knocked out by Tinashe Majoni, in a non-title professional bout during the ‘Rise of Champions’ boxing tournament in Borrowdale last Sunday.

In what has been described as one of the saddest days in Zimbabwean sport, Zimunya sustained head injuries from a flurry of punches by Majoni, who belongs to Charles Manyuchi’s academy.

Otto Boxing Promotions, who promoted the show, have released a statement expressing sympathy with the Zimunya family.

“We learnt with great sadness about the passing on of Taurai Zimunya who passed on during the early hours of November 1, 2021.

“At this moment of sorrow, as Otto Boxing Promotions, we would like to express our heartfelt condolences to his club members, team mates, his fans and the nation at large.

“Taurai was a talented boxer with great potential and we have lost a potential world champion,” reads the statement.

“Our prayers are with you, not forgetting Tinashe Majoni who has been greatly affected by the passing on of his opponent.”

Boxing stakeholders including veteran promoter, Stalin Mau Mau, have pledged to assist the Zimunya family for the funeral.
