Zimbabwe will join the rest of the world in commemorating World Mental Health Day on Sunday, amid growing concerns over the rise in mental health cases associated with substance abuse.

The day has been set aside to raise awareness of mental health issues across the globe and to mobilise efforts in support of various mental health programmes.

According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), the day provides an opportunity for all stakeholders working on mental health issues to talk about their work.

Zimbabwe National Association for Mental Health (ZIMNAMH) programmes manager Mr Timothy Sithole encouraged stakeholders in the mental health field to take an active part in raising awareness on issues to do with mental health.

“The commemorations are coming at a time when we are getting disturbing statistics regarding the rise in the number of people who are abusing substances and becoming mentally challenged. To mental health practitioners, I say this is the day to express ourselves freely,” Mr Sithole said.

ZIMNAMH is an organisation that represents the interests of people living with mental health challenges.
