A 93-year-old Epworth woman was on Tuesday evicted from a house she was living in after her landlord sold the house without notifying her.

Mbuya Nesi Ngando of Ward 4 near Pa Reuben Shopping Centre in Epworth was told to leave the property by men who identified themselves as Messengers of Court.

The men threw her belongings out and locked the property.

Mbuya Ngando, who stays alone, said the people who evicted her did not identify themselves or leave any documents after visiting her.

“My landlord had engaged me, saying I was not paying bills at Epworth Local Board. I went and paid US$150 thinking that would solve the matter.

“I used all my savings, only to be thrown out. I have nowhere to begin,” she said.

Mbuya Ngando had assumed that paying the US$150 meant the property she has occupied for 20 years is now hers.

Due to old age, she does not have any source of income and survives on well-wishers.

Epworth Member of Parliament Honourable Zalerah Makari reacted to the news of Mbuya Ngando’s predicament.

“We opened the door and allowed her back in. The people who evicted her did not identify themselves and we can’t allow her to sleep in the cold. The people should return, so we can map the way forward. If there are consequences, I am ready to face them,” she said.

Hon Makari hopes an agreement will be reached with the owners of the property to allow Mbuya Ngando to live there, as a more permanent solution around her accommodation is being sought.

Contacts of the last known owner of the house Mbuya Ngando knew were not going through.
