NEW: 14 arrested in connection with Marondera robbery

Police have arrested 14 people who allegedly attacked Grassland Horticulture Centre in Marondera last week while armed with a rifle, before stealing a four disk plough valued at US$3 000.

In a statement on Wednesday national police spokesperson, assistant commissioner Paul Nyathi, confirmed the arrest of Godfrey Tatenda Nyakopoto (35), Fungai Matingwina (28), Emmedy Mandizvidza (31), Taurai Chivhanga (45) Erick Matemai (30), Hilary Mabika (36), Sikhumbuzo Rinomhota (27), Cathrine Denga (30), Charles Michel (27), Norman John (25), Gilbert Muchisei (22), Charles Morris (25), Terrence Hove (23) and Elliot Muzenda (47) in connection with the robbery case that took place on October 1.

Police indicated that the robbery was an inside job.

“On the said date, three of the suspects who are employees of Grassland Horticulture hatched a plan to rob the institution and connived with eight other suspects to commit the offence, the suspects stormed Grassland Horticulture Centre, while armed with an unidentified rifle before breaking the window of the guardroom.

“They threatened two security guards, who were on duty, while pointing the firearm through a broken window and fired one shot into the guardroom.

“The security guards escaped, leaving the suspects at the premise who stole a four disk plough valued at US$3 000,” he said.

One of the suspects, Starlin Mhungu, is on the run.
