Matobo South National Assembly representative Cde Saul Ncube (Zanu-PF) has implored Government to accord national monument status to late Vice-President Dr Joshua Nkomo’s rural home in Kezi and to help develop the area.
Kezi is in the traditionally dry Matobo district, and has seen its fair share of food shortages over the years. Whatever infrastructure is available has deteriorated, with roads hardly passible.
Cde Ncube said: “I have been vocal in Parliament about the construction of a university or college in this constituency, which produced one of Zimbabwe’s greatest leaders.
“Certainly, upstream and downstream benefits can be derived from such a concept as infrastructure development.”
Dr Nkomo’s 75-year-old nephew, Cde Thomas Nkomo, added: “The roads and water situation are bad, but the main problem now is food, which has become critical for most people in this district.
“There is also great need to develop infrastructure in light of the significant role we, other Zimbabweans and our local son, Joshua, played in the liberation war.”
National Museums and Monuments of Zimbabwe executive director Dr Godfrey Mahachi said it was possible to turn Dr Nkomo’s Kezi home into a national monument.
