A WOMAN from Mberengwa in Midlands province has been arrested for allegedly killing her seven-month-old baby after she reportedly fed her with milk laced with poison.

The tragic incident happened after Felistus Mpofu (age not supplied) from Shumba village in Mberengwa left her home to look for a job as a maid in Zvishavane.

A relative said she boarded a car and dropped off at the Mandava bus terminus around 8pm and had nowhere to go.

“She spent eight hours at the terminus and the child got very hungry. She bought milk and an organophosphate tablet, which she crushed before mixing it with the milk, and fed her seven-month-old baby,” said the source.

The source said after that, she went to a house next to the terminus to ask for a place to put up.

“While she was there, the child vomited and started crying uncontrollably. The owner accompanied her to Zvishavane District Hospital for medical attention, and, sadly, the child died upon arrival,” said the source, who is privy to the ongoing investigations.

The incident was reported to the police, leading to the arrest of Mpofu.

During investigations, police officers searched her handbag and discovered a small bottle that contained traces of smelly milk. Upon quizzing her, Mpofu admitted she had fed her child poisoned milk.

Midlands police spokesperson, Inspector Emmanuel Mahoko, confirmed the incident.

 Ex-lover jailed for barbaric behaviour

Jealousy has earned a man from Njube suburb in Bulawayo a one-year jail sentence after he kidnapped his ex-girlfriend and her new lover, before he assaulted them and forced the man to drink his urine.

Munyaradzi Shara’s fate was sealed after he appeared before a Bulawayo regional magistrate’s court facing a kidnapping charge.

He pleaded not guilty but was convicted after a full trial.

Shara — who was handed a two-year jail term — had one year of the sentence suspended for three years on condition he exhibits good behaviour.

The court heard that on November 25, 2022, around 6pm, Shara met his ex-lover Sophia Ncube (21) with her new boyfriend Ntandoyenkosi Mbambo (27) and his friend Talent Sibanda (21) in the city centre.

The 28-year-old Shara ordered the three to move towards the Registrar’s offices in Bulawayo.

When they got there, he asked Sibanda to wait for them from a distance, while he was talking to Ncube and Mbambo.

Shara then demanded Mbambo’s mobile phone, before ordering the two, together with Sibanda, to accompany him to Herentals College, where he was employed as a security guard.

Upon arrival, he started assaulting Sibanda with bare hands and kicked him all over the body several times.

Shara then took his former lover and Mbambo into one of the classrooms, where he assaulted Ncube with a broomstick and a chair. He also slapped her all over the body.

He then kicked Mbambo in the face, before he urinated in a plastic bottle and allegedly forced his captive to drink the urine.

Shara detained Mbambo and Ncube in the classroom from 7pm to 12am.

After their release, the two went to the police to report the matter, leading to Shara’s arrest.

Ncube suffered multiple bruises on her left thigh, and a medical report was produced in court as an exhibit. — B-Metro
