MAZOWE High came out top in a schools’ chess tournament held last week on Saturday at Allan Wilson. The organisers of the ‘Patch Chess Tournament’ say there was overwhelming response from participants. Roosevelt Girls High dominated the girls section. “The Saturday Patch Chess tournament was a major breakthrough. The games commenced at 9:00hrs at Allan Wilson and more than 50 students managed to come. This forced us to change some of the plans we had for the tournament,” said the organisers.
Overally Mazoe came first, Ellis Robins second while Roosevelt was third. Mazowe however did not have any student collecting the individual awards. Roosevelt on the other hand provided two players for individual awards to back up their dominance in the girls section and their overall position.
“At the end of the games it turned out that the ladies division was dominated by the Roosevelt queens who gave us the best female player, Kudzaishe Musindo. The boys division had stiff competition as the best player was given to two resilient young chess Grandmasters, Greenwell Chimanya (Prince Edward) and Graffi Bester (Oriel Boys High).”
