WHEN Luke Masomere claimed that his How Mine side could have hammered Caps United by six goals he was accused of smoking palm leaves.
However, the gold miners yesterday showed they have the fire power to produce a six pack when they blew away Hwahwa in a Castle Lager Premier Soccer League tie at Barbourfields yesterday.
Timothy “Magetsi” January scored four goals, including the season’s first hat trick, while last season’s soccer star of the year finalist Limited Chikafa chipped in with a brace.
January found the target in the 7th, 32nd, 59th and 70th minutes while the 34-year old Chikafa celebrated on 18 minutes and 34 minutes.
How Mine’s win not only took their points tally to 12, three behind pace setting Chicken Inn and into fourth position, but also sent a very strong message that Masomere’s men mean business.
The self-proclaimed Doctor of football was, however, quick to dismiss suggestions that his side were gunning to end Dynamos’ four year stranglehold on the Premiership crown.
“We are not fighting for the championship.
“We just want to enjoy our football, we will continue to play to enjoy, but maybe with luck we can achieve something.
“In football it’s normal that you can go through a lean spell but when you start scoring you then expect continuity.
“We have been asleep but now have woken up and want to make things happen,” said Masomere.
For Premiership debutants Whawha, it was a rude awakening.
It was also a bad day in office for Whawha goalkeeper Philip Nhete, formerly with Dynamos, as he gifted Chikafa with the match’s fourth goal.
Nhete also gave the ball away in the 59th minute after making a mess of what should have been routine clearance.
How Mine made the most of that howler with the 21-year old January claiming his hat trick.
The visitors’ coach Lloyd Mutasa conceded that his team were poor.
“It was a bad day for us, conceding six goals; I think it was the first time for me as a coach and for our team.
“We made it easy for them, losing possession in areas we were supposed to play it safe. It really wasn’t our game, but as a team we need to pick ourselves up and good sides are known by the response they give after a bad day in office,” said Mutasa.
