THE Sports and Recreation Commission (SRC) have instituted investigations into circumstances under which the Mashonaland Turf Club allegedly violated Covid-19 lockdown regulations by staging a horse racing event last week.

All sporting activities were suspended on January 3 following the upsurge of coronavirus cases.

It is alleged MTC staged a horse racing competition at Borrowdale Racecourse without approval.

SRC acting director-general Sebastian Garikai says the matter has come to their attention and will be investigated thoroughly.

“The Sports and Recreation Commission is seized with the matter and appropriate processes have been activated to ascertain the circumstances pertaining to the race,” Garikai said.

“The Sports and Recreation Commission takes this opportunity to encourage all sporting disciplines that may want to engage in any activities after the pronouncement of the additional lockdown measures and subsequent suspension of all sporting activities to undertake the outlined measures for approval in line with Statutory Instrument 10 of 2021.

“Any violations will be investigated and the appropriate measures taken.”

Efforts to get a comment for the MTC proved fruitless.
