ALTHOUGH most pool tournaments are sponsored by Delta Beverages, clubs have been increasingly pushing for the sport to be played away from bars and nightclubs to accommodate young people who have talent and interest.
“The biggest challenge is that most pool tables are found within these night spots and bar owners are the biggest sponsors of our league teams,” said Tigers Pool Club Association chairperson Isaac Tichareva.
“We need help from the corporate world. They can take this as an opportunity to market their businesses and establish mutually beneficial relationships with teams and pool leagues.
“Obviously, some infrastructure investment will be required for the move to be a success, especially when you consider that most pool tables are located in bars and nightclubs.”
He believes that appreciating the sport will help achieve the much-needed transition.
“One of the ways this move can benefit society is that it discourages youths from drug abuse and reckless sexual behaviour.
“If society understands the sport and its benefits, it should be fairly easy for us to get the necessary support to take the sport away from bars,” added Tichareva.
