Tasked with bringing some gloss to the Lady Sables brand, Philemon Machisa is under no illusions of grandeur.

The new coach, having taken over from Abigail Kawonzora, intends to change the face of local rugby during his term with the senior women’s rugby team. “I am very happy to have finally got the opportunity to work with the ladies. I have been waiting for an opportunity like this one for a long time. l remain confident that l will not disappoint my rugby fans.

“l really do not feel any pressure, but Abby (Kawonzora) left some big shoes to fill, “ he said. Machisa said he was really impressed by the way his team played against Zambia. He believes the skillful ladies are a terrific squad.

“We have highly talented ladies, who are hungry for success and full of vision.

“These ladies are so impressive, they keep improving with each outing. l am currently the happiest coach.” Machisa pledged to ensure the team rises up the rankings.

“Firstly, l would like to develop women’s rugby as a whole. I want the ladies to be counted amongst the best in the world. “Young upcoming players are already knocking on the door. Nurturing them will be a top priority,” he said. “While the ladies 15s version is at its early stages both in the league and at national level, it is rapidly growing.

“I am positive that we shall soon find ourselves in a better position.

“Women’s sport is ripe for growth and the future of women’s rugby is bright. I appeal to all those who can, to come and help us as we embark on this journey.
