TEEN tennis star Tadiwa Chinamo has been placed on standby for next month’s All-Africa Games.

Chinamo (18), who was a squad member of the Davis Cup team that thumped Moldova last month, will travel to Congo-Brazzaville next month if United States-based Courtney Lock misses out due to school commitments.

Tennis Zimbabwe All-Africa Games manager Linsent Chitiyo said, “We are trying to have Tadiwa as part of the team because we are still discussing with Lock’s University.

“Lock is on a scholarship in the States, we have to negotiate because during the Games most of the universities would have also started their active programs, so we are still discussing with the coaches. Tadiwa is still on stand-by on the moment.”

Lock partnered Mark Fynn for the doubles in last month’s Davis Cup tie at Harare Sports Club and was expected to play a key role for Team Zimbabwe at the All-Africa Games.

Zimbabwe’s number one male player Takanyi Garanganga, and Benjamin Lock, are the other members of the team.

The women’s team comprises of Valeria Bhunu, Karen Muswere, Pauline Chawafambira and Rufaro Chirewa.

Chitiyo said a coaching camp was scheduled for next week.

“Preparations are already ongoing, but the coaching camp is starting on the August 24. Most of the players have been active, working with the coach who has had time to assess them.

“Looking at some of the girls, like Valeria (Bhunu), she even went to play tournaments in Egypt as part of her preparations for the Africa Games.

“We also have Pauline who is also playing tournaments in the States. Muswere and Chirewa were playing in local tournaments.”
