FORMER Davis Cup player Martin Lock looks set to succeed Regis Bhunu as Tennis Zimbabwe president after being nominated by several provinces.
A special meeting is set for October 8 at Harare Sports Club to elect a new executive following an unfruitful AGM held on August 27 but the issue of the president seems to have long been settled.
Lock is the only one who was nominated for the post during a nearly month long nomination period, according to Tennis Zimbabwe administrator Cliff Nhokwara.
“Mr Lock was nominated by some provinces as the candidate and he accepted, he is the only available candidate since no other name was put across during the nomination period.
“As it stands, the previous executive is still there, but a new one is expected on the eighth when we hold our special general meeting. The main agenda is basically to elect a new executive,” Nhokwara said.
Tennis Zimbabwe could not come up with a new president at the August meeting after Bhunu declined re-election despite all the seven active tennis provinces having nominated him.
Bhunu cited a punishing work schedule.
Now the 57-year-old Lock, father to Zimbabwe’s Davis Cup brothers Benjamin and Courtney, is favourite to take up the reins at Tennis Zimbabwe.
Lock has a rich history in tennis and has been serving as Bhunu’s deputy.
He played at America’s Morehead State University on a scholarship from 1981-85 before joining the Zimbabwe Davis Cup team in 1987.
