THE public has welcomed free Covid-19 tests that are now being offered at 12 polyclinics run by the Harare City Council.

“We were suffering at home. Some of us cannot afford to pay for the tests, hence we were forced to stay home even after showing symptoms,” said Glen View-based Grace Mutero.

“I once tried to get tested but failed despite having the money. The backlog was just too much. I am happy with the latest development. This will most likely result in many people getting tested, helping to curb the spread of the virus,” added Baba Tinashe in Mufakose.

Polyclinics that have been cleared to conduct Covid-19 tests include Hatcliffe Poly, Mabvuku Poly, Highfield Poly, Mbare Poly (Edith Opperman), Mufakose Poly, Warren Park Poly, Kambuzuma Poly, Kuwadzana Poly, Rutsanana Poly (Glen Norah), Rujeko Poly (Dzivarasekwa), Glen View Poly and Budiriro Poly.

Harare City Council acting spokesperson, Mr Innocent Ruwende, said the centres will also provide healthcare advice on how to manage the coronavirus.

“We are being supported by the Government in efforts to ease pressure on institutions that are already testing as numbers continue scaling up. We are still in the roll-out stage but we are already being overwhelmed at some of our clinics,” said Mr Ruwende.

Some of the clinics’ staff were still undergoing Covid-19 training that is expected to be completed next week.
