Local corporates have formed the Business Fighting Covid-19 (BFC) Trust to complement Government efforts to fight the coronavirus.

The goal of the initiative is to rapidly deploy flexible resources to assist in the equipping and administration of existing medical facilities.

The Trust yesterday received 30 000 tonnes of mealie-meal donated by Seed Co, which will be distributed to public healthcare workers who are presently fighting the disease.

Additional mealie-meal was also pledged for vulnerable members of society.

Speaking during the handover of the donation at Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals yesterday, Seed Co’s head of public relations and communications Ms Marjorie Mutemererwa said: “As Seed Co, we are happy to play our part in this joint effort to provide some relief to the brave men and women fighting the spread of the deadly Covid-19 virus. We hope this contribution gives our healthcare workers one less thing to worry about.”

The mealie-meal will be distributed between public health workers at Parirenyatwa, Sally Mugabe Central Hospital and Chitungwiza hospitals.

The listed company also pledged an additional 20 000 tonnes of mealie-meal that would be channelled to vulnerable members of society that have been identified by the Trust.

“The healthcare community appreciates this contribution by the BFC Trust. As a society, we do not function in isolation, it is encouraging when we join hands to address issues that affect us all,” said Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals chief executive officer Mr Ernest Manyawo.

Dr Lance Mambondiani, vice chairperson of the BFC Trust who is in charge of finance and resource mobilisation, said corporates intend to use their collective influence “to mitigate the effects of a disease that has claimed over 58 000 victims and disrupted all of our lives”.

Meanwhile, Rainbow Tourism Group (RTG) recently donated linen to Wilkins Hospital. The hotelier was represented by Rainbow Towers Hotel and Conference Centre general manager Trythings Mutyandasvika and New Ambassador Hotel general manager Mr Robson Chishanga.

Wilkins Hospital superintendent Dr Hilda Bara represented the health institution.
