VICE-President Phelekezela Mphoko has lauded Zimbabweans for the tranquillity prevailing in the country saying it was a result of cultivating a culture of peace and respect.

Speaking at the national Culture Week launch at Nemakonde High School in Chinhoyi yesterday, VP Mphoko urged Zimbabweans to maintain the peace.

“The tranquil environment that we are enjoying is because of a peaceful culture that we cultivate time and again as Zimbabweans. The respect we have for each other as a nation has made us resilient despite socio, economic and political changes and I urge each one of us to maintain the peace which is the major source of nation building and identity.”

This year’s Culture Week theme is “Celebrating Arts and Cultural Entrepreneurship” and the VP said Zimbabweans should regard arts and culture as an industry that companies should invest in.

At the launch, Sports, Arts and Culture Minister Andrew Langa said the 14th Culture Week gave the country an opportunity to celebrate its diversity.

“There is no country that has developed economically without anchoring it on culture,” he said.

Mashonaland West Minister of State Faber Chidarikire said the province was home to various cultural tourism sites and ethnic groups.

He pointed out places like Kutama Village and Kutama College in Zvimba where President Mugabe comes from and went to school, which would become a tourist attraction like Soweto, where South Africa’s late President Nelson Mandela once lived.

The launch was attended by several ministers, Government officials and players in the arts and culture sector.
