More than 120 golfers turned up for the inaugural Agape Foundation golf fundraising tournament at Chapman Golf Club on Friday.

The tournament is the brainchild of Ruth Makandiwa’s Agape Family Care, which is a charity arm of the United Family International Church (UFIC).

It caters for the vulnerable and less fortunate. UFIC spokesperson Prime Kufakunesu said the tournament was oversubscribed to the extent that they had to turn away many would-be golfers that had expressed interest in taking part.

“I can safely say that the event was oversubscribed and we had to cut the number of participants to 120 players.

“We are already looking forward to a bigger and better tournament next year, as it is set to become a yearly event,” he said.

The inaugural golf tournament coincided with the birthday of Ruth Makandiwa, who turns 38 today.

Ruth Makandiwa is set to distribute funds raised at the event to charities around the country as part of celebrating her birthday.

“The tournament was held to aid the Agape Family Care, the charity arm of the UFIC, which is the sole responsibility of Ruth Makandiwa. “It raises funds from various quarters to give to the vulnerable.

“We need to celebrate Mama Makandiwa’s birthday in style, so we are going to hand over the proceeds to her, which she will distribute to charities of her choice.”

It was tightly contested card, which Godfrey Jowa narrowly won with 43 points, followed by Kumbirai Nyamusara with 42 points.

For his efforts, Jowa walked away with a 55-inch television, while Nyamusara received a fridge.
