Zimbabwe could soon be a hub for manufacturing medical equipment as well as drugs for both domestic consumption and exports after Iranian companies expressed interest in the sector.

This came after Vice President Dr Constantino Chiwenga, who is also the Minister of Health and Child Care, dangled the investment proposal to potential investors yesterday.

Soon after his arrival in Tehran yesterday, Vice President Chiwenga was quickly taken to a medical equipment exhibition, where he had the opportunity to see contemporary Iranian technology in manufacturing medical equipment.

“From now on, we will follow-up every project we would have agreed,” said VP Chiwenga in his address at the exhibition last night.

“I am aware you manufacture a lot of medical equipment, and we are interested in that area, particularly to manufacture these products in Zimbabwe. We want to cooperate fully with you. Getting the right equipment, getting the right drugs is important to us and we are also interested in exchange programmes where our professionals can be trained here.

“We pride ourselves in training of medical professionals; that is why our professionals are constantly being poached by other countries.”
