Government will begin issuing civic documents in communities affected by post-Independence civil disturbances in parts of Matabeleland and Midlands provinces, as part of healing measures agreed to between authorities and civil society groupings in the region.
A high-level delegation led by the Minister of Home Affairs Kazembe Kazembe Thursday met with the Matabeleland Collective, a group representing civic organisations and agreed on rolling out the programme.
In a statement, Minister Kazembe said conditions for issuance of the documents will be eased.
“Currently we are working with partners to roll out a registration programme which will be launched in due course,” he said.
“Furthermore the requirements for one to be given a birth certificate or national identification card will be relaxed after consultation with the relevant stakeholders.”
He said issuance of death certificates will follow soon after, pending consultations with the Attorney-General and the Ministry of Justice, Legal and Parliamentary Affairs.
