The Sunday Mail

Your home’s appliances perform convenient and time-saving tasks and help you enjoy your lifestyle.

Even in areas served with soft water, your appliances may suffer from limescale build-up.

Limescale can appear as a white or green build-up that forms on the inside of appliances with heating elements, such as a steam iron or coffeemaker.

Adding white distilled vinegar to your appliance offers an inexpensive solution that cleans and removes limescale build-up. Here are preventive steps that may reduce damage to the heating elements and save you a costly repairs.

Coffeemaker

Pour white distilled vinegar into the coffeemaker’s empty water reservoir.

Place the coffee pot in position under the funnel.

Turn on the brewing cycle. The vinegar solution and limescale particles will flush into the coffee pot. Let the vinegar solution stand in the coffee pot for about 20 minutes to remove build-up. Carefully pour this solution into a sink.

Refill the water reservoir with clean, cold water. Turn on the brewing cycle to flush out the vinegar residue into the coffee pot. Refill with another batch of cold water if a vinegar taste persists and go through another brewing cycle.

Dishwasher

Remove any dishes from the dishwasher racks.

Pour distilled white vinegar into the dishwasher’s dispenser.

Turn on the dishwasher cycle to flush the hard water deposits.

Steam iron

Unplug the iron from the electrical outlet.

Fill the iron’s water tank with a vinegar solution made up of equal parts white vinegar and water.

Place the iron upright on the ironing board. Plug the iron into the electrical outlet.

Set the iron to the steam setting.

Heat the iron for five minutes. Stay by the iron.

Turn off the iron settings.

Disconnect the iron from the electrical outlet and let the iron cool.

Bring the iron to a sink.

Pour out the vinegar solution.  homeguides
