At least 78 people were killed in road traffic accidents while 535 were injured between December 15 and 26 this year. About 69 deaths were recorded during the same period last year with 345 injuries. In a statement, police spokesperson Chief Superintendent Paul Nyathi said the number of accidents has increased from 766 in 2013 to 963 in 2014.
The figures also show that the number of accidents recorded on Boxing Day this year stood at 47, almost doubling the 28 recorded on the same day last year.
While police could not provide details of how many vehicles were impounded last year, a total of 2 183 vehicles were impounded this year. 89 565 tickets were issued for various traffic offences.
Police encouraged motorists to exercise caution on the road.
“The Zimbabwe Republic Police encourages drivers and all travellers to continue exercising caution on the road and prevent accidents,” reads part of the statement.
Last week, the police revealed that a total of 87 road accidents were recorded on Christmas day this year compared to 57 from last year. The number of people killed on the same day increased from eight to 10.
Police cite defective vehicles, worn out tyres and speeding as the major contributors of road traffic accidents.
