ZIMBABWE has written a piece of history in the Southern African Development Community (SADC) region after Zimpost postmaster-general, Mr Sifundo Chief Moyo, landed the position of secretary general of the Pan African Postal Union (PAPU) here yesterday.

Information Communication Technology, Postal and Courier Services Minister Dr Jenfan Muswere is now the new chairman of PAPU.

Since the formation of PAPU 41 years, no SADC country had assumed the post despite calls by the African Union to allow leadership for top posts in its agencies to be rotated in all regions.

Mr Moyo landed the post by acclamation during the 10th Ordinary Session of PAPU held in the resort town throughout week.

Ms Jessica Ssengooba from Postal Uganda was voted deputy secretary-general.

In his acceptance speech, Mr Moyo praised the presence of President Mnangagwa and Vice President Constantino Chiwenga for the official opening on Friday.

“I am deeply honoured to have been elected as the secretary-general of the Pan African Postal Union.

“I am sincerely grateful for the recognition from the postal sector for the leadership role.

“What is happening this time to me is a big blessing from God.

“It is a special moment in my life, a momentous occasion for my family, friends and work colleagues, a moment of national pride for my country Zimbabwe, a historic occasion for SADC and Africa.

“Yes, it is a fulfilment of many dreams for many people and it will serve as a foundation for many dreams and aspirations for young lads in Africa.”

In his closing remarks at the conference, Minister Muswere lauded PAPU members for entrusting Zimbabwe with leadership of the organisation.

“We look forward to working with other members of the Bureau, together with the highly professional team at the PAPU Secretariat. Ladies and gentlemen, as we embark on this new cycle, let us reflect together on what we stand for and what is our collective vision as a people.

“We stand for the protection of the sanctity of the Pan African vision that underlines our constitutional order and existence. I implore us all as the PAPU family to remain vigilant to ensure the relevance of the post in the ultimate goal of a digital economy for Africa as enunciated in the AU Agenda 2063 blueprint.”

Mr Moyo will step down from Zimpost to take up the new role, which is full time.

Over the years, Mr Moyo has participated in international postal events, forums, meetings and conferences under the auspices of the Universal Postal Union (UPU), PAPU, the Southern African Postal Operators Association (SAPOA) and other international postal bodies.

He holds a Masters’ Degree in Business Administration (National University of Science and Technology), a BSc Economics Degree (University of Zimbabwe) and an Advanced Diploma in Transport and Logistics (United Kingdom) amongst other local and international postal training sessions he has been exposed to.
