Hissing surprise in the toilet

The Sunday Mail

An Austrian had the kind of morning that nightmares are made of on Monday when a python slid through his drains and bit him while he was sitting on the toilet.

The stunned 65-year-old in the city of Graz turned around shortly after 6am to see a roughly 1,6-metre albino reticulated python in the bowl, police in the province of Styria said in a statement.

“Shortly after he sat on the toilet, the Graz resident, by his own account, felt a ‘pinch’ in the area of his genitals,” the police statement said.

The snake, a constrictor native to Asia that can grow to more than nine metres long, is thought to have escaped a neighbour’s apartment unnoticed and slid into the toilet through the drains, though its exact route was still unclear, the police said.

A reptile expert contacted by the emergency services removed the snake from the toilet, cleaned it and returned it to its owner. Its victim was treated in hospital for minor injuries.

The 24-year-old neighbour, who owns 11 snakes, all non-venomous constrictors, has been reported to the prosecutors’ office on suspicion of negligently causing bodily harm, the police added.

Toddler saves infant

from drowning

An 8-year-old California boy is being praised as a hero after he saved the life of his little sister, who had fallen into their backyard pool.

Thanks to the quick actions of Tino Conboy, his younger sister Cami survived the ordeal and has been given a second chance at life, CBS affiliate KOVR reported.

“I am just so impressed with him,” Tino’s mom, Diana Conboy, told the outlet after the scary incident.

“He was so calm and collected.”

Tino said he was playing with Cami in their Placerville home recently when he noticed that it became too quiet, KOVR reported.

“I looked at the pool and then I saw Cami in there,” Tino recalled to the outlet. “I said, ‘Mom!’”

After hearing her son’s scream, Diana — who works as a nurse — ran to the pool to pull Cami out before beginning cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), according to KOVR.

In the meantime, she told Tino to call 911.

“(Cami) couldn’t move her muscles,” Tino recalled to the outlet.

“She couldn’t move anything, not even her eyes.”

Eventually, Diana said, her daughter was “able to throw up and start breathing”.

“That’s when I saw signs of life,” she explained, noting that while this was happening, Tino “called 911, gave them our address, and told them to get here immediately.”

“It’s kind of a blur to me because it seemed like the timing was forever, but I am sure it was just minutes,” the mom added.

Though Tino was the one who saved Cami’s life, the 8-year-old boy credited his younger sister for teaching him how to scream loud enough to alert their mother.

“Basically Cami gave her power to me and then that’s how I had the power to scream,” he explained.

“And then mom came over and jumped in and got Cami out.”

“I thought (mom) was brave that she just went in so that she could save her daughter,” he added of Diana.

Following the scary incident, the family had a fence put up around their pool.

Diana told the outlet she feels fortunate that things did not turn out worse but hopes their story will inspire other parents to take safety precautions with backyard pools and learn CPR.

“It was definitely the beginning of the worse day of my life, but ended with the best day of our lives,” Diana shared.

Chaos over removed

shoes during flight

A man’s reaction to a passenger’s decision to stick their bare feet up during a flight left people divided, with some dubbing it over the top, while others agreed with him.

Plane etiquette is a surprisingly controversial area, with lots of unwritten rules.

There are eternal debates on what is acceptable — for instance, should you recline your seat if it is going to encroach on the person behind you? (Many would argue, no you should not.)

Another hot topic in the travel etiquette debate is passengers stripping off their shoes and socks. Many travellers are firmly opposed, while others claim it is not a problem.

One passenger was not impressed after a fellow traveller not only went barefoot, but then also stuck their feet on the man’s armrest.

Mr Walker’s video went viral after he filmed himself tipping water over the person’s feet in a bid to get them to move.

In the viral video, which has been seen nearly four million times, the man explained: “Had to do something.”

As the fellow passenger rests their foot on the man’s armrest, the man tips a bottle of water, prompting the barefoot enthusiast to withdraw swiftly. The video on TikTok from the Walker Brothers racked up more than 10 000 comments, as many praised the traveller for his handling of the situation.

One person commented: “Right on. I am so tired of people and their lack of respect for others.”

Another joked: “I would have locked hands with it wouldn’t have let go no matter how hard they pulled. It’s my foot now.”

“I can’t even imagine having that level of audacity to put my foot on a stranger’s armrest, like how?” asked another.

But others weren’t so sure, as one commented: “I would turn around and just say it, not nicely.”

Another said: “I would have just lifted the armrest to fix that.”

A third added: “Just talk to the person.” — Wires.
