A Harare commuter omnibus driver has been jailed 18 months and prohibited from driving for two years after he was found guilty of running over a pedestrian and causing his death.

Madenyika Admire (25) of Southlea Park was initially jailed for 24 months when he appeared before a Harare Magistrate charged with culpable homicide.

The court suspended six months of his jail term for five years on the condition that he does not commit a similar offence within the same period.

He was convicted on his plea.

The court heard that Madenyika hit and seriously injured Simbarashe Muchaurawa who was walking on a pavement along Fidel Castro Street, formerly Charter Road, on March 1 this year.

On the day in question, at around mid-morning, Madenyika was parking a Nissan Caravan (AEU1069) on a pavement at the corner of Fidel Castro Street and Leopold Takawira Street.

Muchaurawa intended to cross Fidel Castro Street and as he walked on the pavement, Madenyika spotted police officers who were enforcing traffic rules.

He decided to speed off, hitting Muchaurawa, who sustained serious head injuries and later died at a local hospital.
