Although spectators are still banned from sporting events, Government will facilitate the live broadcast of the President’s Uhuru Cup showdown between Dynamos and Highlanders at the National Sports Stadium on Sunday.
The encounter, which will be the first soccer match pitting local clubs since March 31 last year when the lockdown began, will be played under strict health protocols.
The game will be part of commemorations to mark Zimbabwe’s 41 years of Independence.
It is the major highlight of activities lined up by the Ministry of Youth, Sport, Arts and Recreation.
In a statement released to The Sunday Mail Sport, the ministry said athletes would also take part in the Independence torch relay from the Kopje area to the National Sports Stadium.
“The Ministry of Youth, Sport, Arts and Recreation is pleased to be advise the nation at large that as Zimbabwe will be celebrating 41 years of Independence, a football match between Highlanders and Dynamos is being organised. The match is being organised to celebrate 41 years of a tranquil environment which has allowed Zimbabweans to participate and enjoy sport and recreation in a peaceful Zimbabwe,” read part of the statement.
“The ministry is working closely with the Ministry of Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services to facilitate the live broadcast of the match on national television, radio stations and livestreaming through online broadcasting channels.”
Only a few dignitaries will watch the encounter live.
It will be the first time since Independence that the Uhuru Cup, which traditionally attracted a full house, would be played in an empty stadium.
“The Ministry of Youth, Sport, Arts and Recreation, in the whole scheme of Independence Day celebrations, is principally responsible for the torch-lighting ceremony, football match and the children’s party. The ministry is on schedule in terms preparations for these and in all process and activities leading to their successful delivery.
“Athletes and support personnel for the torch-lighting ceremony, which will be starting from the Harare Kopje where the Independence flame is ceremonially burning, have been selected and training has since commenced.”
Preparations for the events are at an advanced stage.
There will also be various commemorations across the country.
“Organising committees for district and provincial activities have been set up and are in the process of putting in place a programme for their centres to mark 41 years of Independence.”
Overall, the Uhuru Cup provides both Bosso and DeMbare fans with a chance to see some of their new players in action.
