GOKOMERE High School choir proved they are a cut above the rest when they came out victors after an imperious performance at the National Catholic Schools Association music competitions held at the Harare Institute of Technology a fortnight ago.

The Masvingo-based outfit scored 681 points to beat 29 other choirs, in the process walking away with a floating trophy and US$250 prize money.

Kutama Boys High School from Chinhoyi diocese walked away with US$200 after coming second with 671 points while third place went to Shungu High from Gweru.

Representing Harare Diocese and taking fourth place was Visitation High School.

The top five choirs received prize money while those who finished among the first 10 received floating trophies.

Gokomere High School choir director Mr Claybough Mapfumo said: “We worked hard and deserved this prize, but we give all glory to God who saw us through. We had limited time to prepare and most choir members are also preparing for their Ordinary and Advanced Level final examinations.

“But we managed to strike a balance and we came out top. My choir was spot on in terms of notation, tone, dynamics and interpretation. I am glad we scooped the top prize,” Mr Claybough said.

The set-piece for the competition was “We are One People” which was put together by talented composer Mr Albert Munyanyi, who took to the podium after the contest to thank all the competitors for a positive response.

Bishop Rudolf Nyandoro from Gokwe Diocese, who was the guest of honour, also paid tribute to the choirs, trainers and teachers who dedicated their time to make the event a success.
