LEO Magozz (pictured) — the “Fire Emoji” hitmaker — says he wants to win more awards.

Born Tavonga Magombedze, the talented hip-hop artiste scooped two gongs at the recently held National Arts Merit Awards (NAMA). He emerged winner in the Outstanding Newcomer and Outstanding Song categories.

“I am hunting like a hungry lion. I want more awards in my cabinet and I am working hard to make sure this happens,” he said.

The gifted singer reckons accolades add value to a musician’s brand.

“Not only do these awards motivate us to work hard, they also send a clear message to promoters and corporates with regard to our ratings. In short, they improve profiles. For instance, you start being referred to as an award-winning artiste.”

The Chegutu-born musician attributes his success to unwavering support from his fans and promoters.

“It was not easy to rise from Chegutu and make it big in the music industry, but God allowed me. I want to thank all those who have made the journey possible.

“I will continue working hard. I have composed several songs and will be dropping some of them later this year.”

Leo Magozz is one of the nominees for the eighth edition of the Changamire Hip-Hop Festival and Awards, which will be held on April 12.

Founder and patron of the awards Tafadzwa Muchechetere, who is famously known as Zimboy Jackson in the music industry, said votes will decide.

“Music lovers are still voting. Leo Magozz, just like other musicians, is getting votes. The race is open. We also have artistes like Holy Ten and Voltz JT who are getting healthy votes,” said Zimboy Jackson.

After the Changamire Hip-Hop Festival and Awards, there will also be the Zim Hip-Hop Awards led by the Bulawayo-based Adrian “Beefy” Harrison. Beefy feels Leo Magozz is among the favourites to scoop gongs this year.

“In our upcoming awards, Leo Magozz is among the favourites because his name is everywhere right now. His song ‘Fire Emoji’ is causing waves on the streets and that counts for something,” said Beefy.
