FC PLATINUM look headed for another title while their midfielder Rodwell Chinyengetere is making a strong case for another Soccer Star of the Year gong.

The defending champions yesterday stretched their lead at the top of the Castle Lager Premier Soccer League to seven points after edging Nichrut 1-0 at Ascot.

Chinyengetere scored his 14th goal early in the second half to deliver the three points.

As Pure Platinum Play were grinding out a result in Gweru, their title rivals Ngezi Platinum Stars were playing out a goalless draw with Chapungu at the Baobab.

Ngezi are now on 61 points and do not look like a team capable of overhauling FC Platinum.

The shock departure of Tonderai Ndiraya still seems to be playing on the minds of the Ngezi players who did not show the hunger expected of title contenders.

Interim coach Cliffton Kadurira maintains that Ngezi will fight until the last day but deep down his heart, he must know fighting alone may not deliver the title to Mhondoro.

Maybe a miracle will do.

As Ngezi Platinum Stars look bewildered, Norman Mapeza is trying his best to keep his team’s feet on the ground.

“We still have matches to play, points to fight for and we can only talk of the championship at the end of the season.

“This was a difficult game for us and I am glad that we managed to come out of this one with maximum points,” he said.

How good is Rodwell Chinyengetere?

“Well I don’t want to say much because it is you guys (journalists) who talk about these things, you are the ones who ask whether this one has been the best or if this one has not been the best.

“But for me as a coach, he has been doing well, scoring crucial goals. However, I must add that it’s about the team,” said Mapeza as he side stepped the Soccer Star of the Year debate.
