NORMAN MAPEZA’S FC Platinum reduced the gap between themselves and log leaders Chicken Inn to two points after they edged Harare City in an exciting Castle Lager Premier Soccer League match at Mandava yesterday.
Junior product Nigel Papias put Pure Platinum Play in front with his second touch of the game in the 55th minute after he had come in for Emmanuel Mandiranga a minute earlier.
Livewire winger Tatenda Marshall Mudehwe doubled the lead with a sublime volley in the 66th minute after he was set up by Zambian import Obrey Chirwa.
“It was a massive result for us. We still have nine points to play for and we have to win the remaining games and see what happens.“My players had pressure after hearing the Chicken Inn result but I talked to them at half time,” said an elated Mapeza. Harare City, who wore yellow ribbons in honour of the late former Warriors defender Paul Gundani, also had their opportunities with the closest being a Talent Chawapiwa free kick in the 67th minute that missed the target by a whisker.
A minute of silence was held before kick off in honour of the late former Warriors defender Paul Gundani who passed away last Wednesday and was buried in Kwekwe yesterday.City coach Mangwiro was not impressed with his goalie Dube.
“We gave away two goals. Tafadzwa (Dube) should have covered the second goal but such is football. We will see what goes on in the remaining three matches.”
