CAPS UNITED shareholder Farai Jere has broken his silence, albeit very briefly, on the goings on at the troubled Green Machine.

Jere, who is said to own 40 percent of the club, has hitherto conspicuously remained silent since majority shareholder Twine Phiri announced his intent to sell his controlling stake in the club.

Jere has the right of first refusal in the event that Phiri decides to offload his stake, it has been established.

However, the Harare freight executive, who has kept a distance from the club’s affairs since November 2012, revealed that he is not aware that 60 percent of the club is up for sale.

“I have always said I am busy with other things so I am not going to discuss Caps United much.

“However, let me say I am not aware that Caps United in on the market,” said Jere when reached for comment last week.

A fortnight ago, Phiri told Star FM that he was willing to sell his stake if the right offer comes.

There were even reports linking a group of Bulawayo businessmen with the stake.

While some within the Caps United ranks argue that Phiri cannot dispose of Makepekepe without Jere’s consent.

Revelations that the club’s share certificate does not list Jere as a shareholder provide another twist to the tale.

Documents at the Registrar of Companies — company number 13003/ 99, as last updated on December 23, 2005 — have Twine, Ali and Aysha Phiri, who all share the same address in Hillside, Harare as Caps United Football Club (Private) Limited’s shareholders.

However, Phiri has on several occasions acknowledged Jere as a Caps United shareholder.

“The issue of the share certificate is just hot air.

“Jere’s name is not captured because some procedures, such as they payment of capital gains tax to Zimra were not undertaken when he purchased his stake.

“However, the man has enough documents to prove his ownership.

“Phiri has also acknowledged Jere as a shareholder so there is no doubt on that front,” said an official close to the matter.
