Eyes for beauty

The Sunday Mail

THEY say the eye is the gateway to the soul.

This truth can be applied to the centre of excellence, Optinova Eyecare, in Avondale, where they specialise in giving customers spectacles to improve their eyesight.

What stands out is how those behind the place have managed to beautify it with an inviting garden.

When you get to the centre with an eyesight challenge, you might struggle to clearly observe the beauty of the garden. However, that will not be the case when you leave after restoration of your eyesight.

The restored vision will make you appreciate this place more.

The small garden is meticulously maintained by Mr Gift Kapudzarowa. Outside the precast wall, the lawn is fenced by a small well-trimmed hedge of the golden duranta (duranta repens).

In the yard, you will be entranced by the giant king palm (archontophoenix alexandrae).

Triplets of the miniature pygmy date palm (phoenix roebelenii) are at the front entrance, together with other plants such as mother-in-law’s tongue (sansevieria trifasciata), bugleweed (ajuga reptans), snowrose (serrissa foetida), Joseph’s coat (alternanthera bettzickiana) and periwinkle (cantharanthus roseus).

What a sight to behold!

What is a garden without roses?

In William Shakespeare’s play “Romeo and Juliet”, we find the following: “A rose by any other name would smell as sweet.”

Roses are among the oldest garden plants known to humans.

To bring contrast in texture, the elephant ear (alocasia odora) was included here. A word of caution for the elephant ear: It is very poisonous. It seems to have a charm to kids, who usually taste the plant, with horrible consequences.

The shrimp plant (justicia brandegeana) is among the vegetation at the entrance, with its display of yellow bracts that can be seen all year round.

On the other side of the car park is a bed of different plants that tantalise the senses but outstanding are the white roses, together with yellow gazanias and agapanthus.

The driveway was neatly done and brings out the oomph of the place.

The different exit points provided allow ease of access from whichever direction. The blending of colours to surrounds is important, and this comes out well in the landscape here.

Finally, the trimming of the lawn edge gives the yard its neatness and habitability. Visit the place when you are in Avondale and learn one or two things about greening up your premises.
