While efforts are being made to improve power generation from hydro and thermal stations, experts say the method is expensive and there is need to venture into alternative energy sources.

University of Zimbabwe department of electrical engineering, Engineer Golden Kapungu said the country was facing financial challenges hence the need to invest in cheaper sources of energy.

“We have an abundance of resources in the country that has not been fully utilised in the country. There are areas that are not suitable for agriculture, these can be used for solar farming,” he said.

“We also have river whose water flows yearly, why not establish mini hydro projects to feed into the national electricity grid?”

The Rural Electrification Agency has spent millions of dollars in recent years to establish mini-solar power grids to service small, outlying centres.

The ongoing programme has largely benefited schools, health institutions and Government installations in rural areas.
