Perennially dry water taps in areas such as Borrowdale, Ruwa, Mabvuku-Tafara and Chitungwiza will soon dispense running water as Harare City Council moves to beat a December deadline to avail clean water throughout the city and its satellite towns.

The city’s corporate communications division said water supply was expected to improve within the coming month as the city continues to implement a water infrastructure rehabilitation project financed by a US$144 million loan from China.

“Water supply declined by 33 percent from 600 mega-litres recently due to treatment units that were decommissioned to allow for replacement plant to be installed at our water plants, but progress is being recorded in the rehabilitation project,” said Harare City Council.

“There shall be increase in water supply from about 400 to 650 mega-litres by year end which means areas like Borrowdale, parts of Ruwa, Mabvuku and Chitungwiza which had gone for years without water will soon be receiving water.”

Rehabilitation works are on-going at both Morton Jaffrey and Prince Edward water plants with raw and clear water pumps having already been replaced.

Of the 400 mega litres that was being produced, council says at least 60 percent of it is being lost due to underground pipe leakages.

“Installation of pressure reducing valves and repairs which we are currently doing shall curb water losses and increase water supply to residents,” said corporate communications division.
