DONGO SAWMILL registered their first win of the season, but remained rooted at the foot of the table after dismissing fellow Castle Lager Premier Soccer League débutantes Flame Lilly at Lafarge yesterday.

Blessing Dzumbunu and Kudzai Chideu scored in either half, while McMillan Chigora scored for the hosts.

Dongo coach Shadreck Mugurasawe, who narrowly survived the axe as the team appeared to be settling for the much-travelled Partson Ndabambi, said the win is a sign that his young side has a lot to offer.

“I am very happy with the three points we collected. It’s a very big motivation for this young team and everybody associated with Dongo. It is a sign of brighter days that await us. This team only needs time and patience. I can’t start promising that we will finish on this or that position, but what I can say is we will be picking points regularly,” said Mugurasawe.

Dzumbunu thrust the visitors into the lead two minutes before the breather when he pounced on a rebound after Prosper Chigumba, in goals for Flame Lily, failed to deal with a Physwell Madhazi shot.

Dongo’s celebrations were cut short on the stroke of half-time by Chigora, who rifled into the roof of Forward Pfumojena’s goal from close range.

However, Dongo’s search for a first win in 12 matches would not be deterred and they continued piling pressure. They were duly rewarded six minutes after the break, with Chideu heading home off a well-taken corner kick by Never Tigere.

The result left Flame Lilly 14th on the standings with nine points, but coach Nesbert Saruchera remains hopeful.

“We really wanted a win, but complacency was our biggest undoing. However, we are not losing hope and will definitely bounce back to winning ways,” said Saruchera.
