On the 22nd of May 2014 we as young writers visited the Harare City Library where there was a glamorous and educating event.
The reception was warm and welcoming. Inside the library there were students from St Mary’s High School, Young Africa Academy, not forgetting United Methodist Christian College, where I am learning.

The major motive of the event was to encourage young people to be writers of books based on our culture and to also read other people’s culture.

The program enabled young people’s voices to be heard through writing and reading.

The well-known Zimbabwean singer and poet, Mr Albert Nyathi, graced the event by reciting some of his poems. Finally he donated his book titled, “My Daughter”, to the young children’s library to encourage writing and reading.

There was Mr Msipa the poet and other Zimbabwean writers who gave hints, correcting and encouraging young people to showcase their talents in the field of writing short stories and poems which they comment on.

The most important thing we learnt is the interaction of cultures. We learnt that culture is diverse and can be learnt through writing and reading, and it is our duty as the young generation, to promote the diversity of cultures through writing our own works.

As students, we are therefore left with the responsibility to promote cultural diversity and inclusion through reading and writing.
