Skyscrapers around the world are magnets for suicide. The buildings’ heights combined with the hard pavement below can seem very appealing to a suicidal person.

The skyscrapers of New York City are especially popular, with as many as 60 or more people a year using them to kill themselves. The year 2008 was an especially bad one for skyscraper suicides in New York due to the recession in the United States.

According to a recent study conducted by the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, the percentage of suicides by jumping from New York City’s skyscrapers is by far higher than that of any other American city. To get an idea of how big the problem is, keep in mind that of the 473 people who committed suicide in New York City in 2008, nearly sixty of them did so by jumping from skyscrapers. – Online.
