LEARNERS in schools and colleges who tested positive for Covid-19 will remain quarantined during the festive season as part of measures to prevent the spread of the virus, authorities have said.

Although the number of affected students could not be readily provided, multitudes are understood to be still in quarantine after schools and colleges closed for the holidays on December 17.

Secretary for Higher and Tertiary Education, Innovation, Science and Technology Development, Professor Fanuel Tagwira said it was important for institutions to strictly adhere to health protocols.

“At the moment I cannot say the exact number of students we have in our institutions because the numbers change every day, however, there are students that are still in quarantine,” he said.

“Measure have been taken to minimise the spread of the virus in communities. We have engaged PMDs (Provincial Medical Directors) and they are helping us in that regard.”

Communications and Advocacy Director for the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education Mr Taungana Ndoro said boarding schools have become quarantine centres for learners.

The Government has taken steps to minimise Covid-19 in schools, including authorising the inoculation of 14-17 year olds using the Sinovac vaccine.

The country has, however, seen an increase in Covid-19 new cases over the past few weeks.
Last week alone, the country recorded over 90 deaths and more than 11 000 new infections.
