ONE of the most controversial subjects in the Christian world is giving or “seeding”, with differing theories and doctrines emanating from the many denominations in existence. With the prosperity gospel being the order of the day in many congregations, the emphasis on giving to the Kingdom of God has been reinforced.
Many critics, however, have come out guns blazing, accusing some church leaders of fleecing congregants of their hard-earned money by encouraging them to give abundantly if they are to be prosperous in life.
From tithing to offerings, the issue of giving in church has been a hot subject of debate
I recently read Pastor Tom Deuschle’s book “First Fruits: So simple, yet so misunderstood”, which explores this principle and practice.
Many churches the world over practice this type of offering, but I have never really grasped the significance or purpose of first fruits which is why I decided to read through Pr Deuschle’s book.
The book does not only dwell on the issue of first fruits but also explains other types of offerings and their differences. Biblical references are used to great effect throughout, making the concepts and principles easier to understand.
While some Christians are reluctant to part with their earnings with the belief that the money goes into church leaders’ pockets, this book clarifies certain issues, giving a better understanding of when, how and why people should give to the church.
The text starts off by delving into the giving nature of God, exploring the various aspects of giving and receiving, making use of situations from the Bible that concur with the subject.
“From Genesis to Revelation, God’s passion to give is recorded; God gave us life, He gave mankind the earth and dominion over all the earth . . . God gave His Only Son, Jesus, to set us free from the power of sin and death,” Pr Deuschle says.
While the concept of first fruits has its roots during the time when agricultural produce was still being used as currency, with people offering their first harvest to God, modern giving is different.
“Whenever we determine to give our first fruits, it means we give God the first of anything that comprises increase in our lives; the first of everything that we have produced or earned. First fruits are usually monetary in today’s economy, and may be the profit from our first customer, our first contract, first building or first portion.”
The book explores many other aspects of first fruits and how they benefit Christians if exercised properly.
At the end of the day though, it all comes down to individuals and the level of their faith. In all, this is a great read for Christians who seek a better understanding of seeding.
