The Sunday Mail

IT is not easy being a boss, let alone a female one in a patriarchal society. As Zimbabwe joined the rest of the world in commemorating World Radio Day yesterday, our correspondent spoke to Nyaradzo Makombe, one of the few female station managers in the country. Makombe heads Zimbabwe’s first commercial talk radio station — Capitalk 100.4 FM. The radio broadcasts in the country’s capital, focusing mainly on issues affecting the community of Harare and surrounding areas. Read on . . .

Q: How did you get into radio?

A: It is a funny story really. Growing up, I used to talk a lot such that my mum called me “kachi radio”, so I guess she pointed me to it. I was first recruited by Zimbabwe Broadcasting Corporation (ZBC) and learnt on the job. I was then voice-trained by Dorcas Chibanda and a gurky old man called Neganje (God rest his soul).

I had an opportunity to be on television presenting the news on the Sunday Edition. But nothing beats radio —                                                                                                                                                 it is my passion and bones. I have made it to leadership in the media industry, a milestone I believe is for all women trying to move up.

Q: What qualities do you think helped you rise through the ranks?

A: On a personal level, I love my job and I work really hard. I take myself as a candid and somewhat headstrong person, especially on things I strongly believe in. If I like it, I stand for it. With my team, I try to create an environment where all their contributions are welcome.

I can suggest but I prefer independent thinkers who are willing to try out new things. I do push and get frustrated when I feel like any of my team members does not see the potential I see in them. I take myself as a nurturing leader.

Q: The Covid-19 pandemic has caused untold suffering not only in the country but across the globe, how are you coping?

A: The situation is not good for business. However, we have had to innovate and adapt. Our bottom line has been affected, but our listeners are at the core of our business.

As a leader, you still have to lead. It is difficult to try and work safely and still make a profit. I have taken a cautious leadership role. I am expected to plan and strategise, so I take each day as it comes because I want to provide a safe environment for my team. Providing stability in a world that seems to be tipping is not easy. I have to achieve a delicate balance managing talent, delivering to the audience and making a profit.

Q: There is a lot of uncertainty in most workplaces due to the Covid-19-induced lockdown. How are you managing the situation at Capitalk 100.4 FM?

A: I try to share our status with my team so that they appreciate our position in case of any eventuality. It is definitely not on our agenda to lay off anyone. In fact, we provide data allowances, Covid-19 relief and regular free testing for the team. I appreciate the anxiety that comes with working in these times and firmly believe no one should lose their livelihood.

Q: How are you managing teams that are working from home?

A: Oh God, working from home is not easy. As a leader, it is important to be clear about targets and goals.

Tracking work done and offering support as much as possible is important. Communication is critical, even over-communication in some cases, so that you are a transparent leader. By this, the team earns your trust.

Q: What is your parting shot as we commemorate World Radio Day?

A: Radio continues to be an important conduit for communication, so we give a big thank you to our listeners and clients.

As Capitalk 100.4 FM, we shall continue having those important conversations from the political, economic and social fronts for the benefit of our country. Happy World Radio Day to all broadcasters!
