China embassy launches media awards

The Chinese Embassy in Zimbabwe yesterday launched the Sino-Zimbabwe media awards which will reward journalists for reporting on matters between the two countries.

China African Economic and Cultural Exchange and Research Centre (CAECER), the Jacaranda Culture and Media Corporation as well as the Zimbabwe Union of Journalists (ZUJ) will coordinate the awards that will see winners receiving up to US$1000 in prize money.

Speaking at the launch of the awards in Harare yesterday, China’s deputy ambassador to Zimbabwe Mr Zhao Baogang, said the accolades will seek to celebrate the sound relations between Harare and Beijing.

“Media plays a very vital role in strengthening our relations with the Zimbabwean government. We therefore want to recognise efforts made by journalists, be it positive or negative to mend these two countries together.

“Some of the stories that media houses published for the last three years I have been working in Zimbabwe have definitely built my confidence and the work that the Chinese community is doing to assist in every way possible to boost Zimbabwe’s economy,” he said.

Mr Zhao said the lucrative prizes that will motivate the media fraternity to critically cover issues that affect relations between the two countries.
