Chevrons gets the buzz back

OUTSIDE the confinements of the boundary rope and practicing nets, the Chevrons have been bonding and expressing love.

The national cricket team had a team bonding lunch hosted by 24-year-old batsman Ryan Burl at his Chisipite residence last Tuesday.

“So we meet at my place boys,” said Burl at the conclusion of a net session at Harare Sports Club.

After refreshing and doing some school runs, they all headed to Burl’s place, some still clad in their national warm up kits while others put on their casuals.

There were no speeches, it was drinking and feasting, laughing and joking with Tendai Chisoro and Christopher Mpofu ensuring there was banter going around.

House music, hip hop, pop and some alternative rock played from Solomon Mire’s bluetooth speaker.

Two days after the braai, captain Hamilton Masakadza and his lads donated kit and conducted a coaching clinic at the National Rehabilitation Centre in Ruwa on Thursday.

But the busy week had begun with some senior players including Brendan Taylor, Sean Williams, Craig Ervine and Masakadza visiting Thabo Ncube, an upper six Falcon College, who is diagnosed with Acute Promyclocytic Leukemia, at Parirenyatwa Hospital.

The four cricketers posed for photos with Ncube and presented him with a national team jersey signed by members of the team.

“I think it’s important to show love to everyone, so we thought we could do this gesture for Thabo Ncube,” said Williams.

After the recent pay and play disputes between the players and their bosses, there were concerns the Chevrons would struggle to be a team again with the return of a player who missed June’s Tri Series.

However, the team is buzzing again ahead of its departure for South Africa on Wednesday amid genuine belief that they will give the hosts a good run for their money.
