CHAPUNGU continued their miserable start to the 2016 Castle Lager Premier Soccer League when they were held by Ngezi Platinum at Ascot yesterday.
The airmen have managed a single win in seven matches, collecting a paltry six out of a possible 21 points and pressure is mounting on coach John Nyikadzino as the side hovers around the relegation zone.
Xolani Ncube put the hosts ahead after 33 minutes but Chapungu could not hold on as Ngezi Platinum snatched the equaliser four minutes after the restart through Knowledge Machona’s header.
Nyikadzino was disappointed with the result but remained hopeful that his charges would soon turn the corner.
“It’s a disappointing result for us. We should have won this match but we conceded a soft goal,” he said. “But it is part of football, we just have to prepare for the next match.”
New boys Ngezi Platinum have steadily been picking up crucial points on the road and yesterday’s point – coming a week after they were thumped 1-4 at home by Highlanders – pushed them up to seventh from 10th on the log standings.
“It’s a good result for us considering we lost our last match. We showed character despite being a goal down. We hope to build from this performance,” said coach Clifton Kadurira.
Forgotten defender Machona, whose career has been blighted by injuries, was thrilled with his goal.
“It feels good to be back in the top flight league after a number of seasons in the wilderness. I want to resuscitate my career and I believe this is my season to make an impression,” he said.
