Acting President Emmerson Mnangagwa yesterday paid tribute to late Steelmakers chief executive Mr Alexander Johnson, describing him as a humble and keen businessman.
Mr Johnson his wife Achama, and an employee died last Wednesday when their vehicle collided head-on with another at the 196km peg on the Harare-Bulawayo Highway.
Yesterday, the couple’s bodies were flown to their native India for cremation.
Addressing mourners at a funeral service in Kwekwe, Acting President Mnangagwa said: “Mr Johnson was a committed businessman, and this could be seen by the way he carried himself. He was very humble. We are deeply saddened by his passing on. What should console us is that the way of selecting those that have to depart is known by God and He does that at his own time.
“I want to give you an example in our party, Zanu-PF. Some people buy membership cards for personal reasons so that they abuse it. Others buy them to protect themselves in case what they were hoping for does not go as planned and others, still, buy them so that they can be fully committed members who will dedicate their lives to working for the country. The same applies in business and I say Mr Johnson was one of the few dedicated businesspeople in the country.”
Confederation of Zimbabwe Industries president Mr Busisa Moyo said Mr Johnson was a valued member of the organisation, contributing immensely to iron and steel production.
