A local financial services firm has contributed US$200 000 for food relief efforts targeted at militating against the impact of the coronavirus.

Access Forex — a foreign currency remittance platform run by local financial services company, Access Finance — is presently rallying the private sector to fight the pandemic. Resources are currently being pooled to assist vulnerable communities facing food shortages.

The US$200 000 contributed by Access Forex — some of which was sourced from Zimbabweans in the United Kingdom and South Africa — is targeting the poor through the “Feed-A-Million” campaign currently underway.

The company will provide food aid in the form of hampers to the vulnerable and needy across the country.

The programme will begin in Harare, Bulawayo and Victoria Falls before being rolled out across the country.

Dr George Chirwa, executive director of Access Forex, said Zimbabweans should close ranks, especially during these difficult times. “We believe that local organisations and people can play a big role in resolving the country’s current challenges.

‘‘ This initiative is our small way of supporting Government initiatives. The Government needs help from all of us to deal with these challenges,” he said.

Zimbabweans were also challenged to step up to the plate through contributing to the “Feed-A-Million” campaign.

The country has so far registered one death out of nine Covid-19 infections.

Government has also unveiled various cross-cutting measures to contain the spread of the virus. An appeal to raise more than US$2,2 billion to counteract the socio-economic impact of the pandemic has since been launched, including a $600 million kitty to provide for social safety nets.
