A total of 64 babies were born at Harare Central Hospital and Chitungwiza General Hospital on Christmas Day, signalling one of the highest numbers of births recorded on this special day in the last few years.
Thirty-eight of the babies are boys while 26 are girls.
Of the newly born babies, 43 were born at Harare Central Hospital while 21 were born at Chitungwiza General Hospital.
Harare Central Hospital matron, Mr Enock Dongo told The Sunday Mail that the number of births was much higher than last year’s 28.
“Forty three babies were born on Christmas Day, 27 of them are boys. Our first Christmas baby was delivered at 0145 hours and she is a girl. Our first Christmas baby born through the caesarian section at 0248 hours is also a girl.”
Mr Dongo said among the newly born children are a set of twins.
Eight babies were delivered through the caesarian section, with six of them boys.
At Chitungwiza General Hospital, 21 babies were delivered. Eleven of them are boys.
The matron-in-charge at Chitungwiza General Hospital, Ms Miriam Kaseke said they had a very busy holiday and all the babies were delivered successfully.
Many mothers were discharged yesterday except for those who had delivered through caesarian operations.
