18-area.com: Kallisto Pasuwa: Master of archaic football

The Sunday Mail

TODAY I write about Dynamos, as a Dynamos supporter.

It won’t be a usual occurrence so absorb this instalment.

The good a man does is often interred with his bones but the evil lives after him, so let it be with Kallisto Pasuwa.

Great Khali I liked, loved his persona but hated his type of football.

At its best it was an eyesore.

Yes we had moments of excitement under Pasuwa but it was only when we were on the edge, needing to deliver.

Maybe Pasuwa borrowed from the Catenacio style of the 1960s.

Too weak to play attacking football?

Ok, no worries concentrate on defence and employ counteracting system.

God forgive Pasuwa, I don’t.

I will not. Despite winning four consecutive league titles, Dynamos never really caught the eye under Pasuwa.

There was nothing exciting about watching the team.

DeMbare’s style was a bad advertisement for local football.

Dynamos need flair because at the end of the day a bad footballer is bad for the entrance fee.

The only way to draw crowds is exciting football, not necessarily tiki taka but something close to the Dynamos of the 80’s and early 90’s – a team built on a strong defence and driven by attacking wingers who are ready and willing to tear into opponents.

The numbers testify to how bad Dynamos were during the just-ended season.

The class of 2014 was the worst scoring Dynamos in modern day Premier Soccer League with a paltry 34 goals.

This Dynamos of 2014 is the worst scoring PSL champion, an ugly record previously held by the Caps United team of 2005, which scored 37 goals.

Magitare’s cordless guitar

For decades I have paid my way to watch Dynamos win, draw and lose to teams from near and far.

The third row of the Vietnam stand at Rufaro probably knows my behind by name.

Many a times I have wondered if my behind will one day feel a grandstand that is proudly DeMbare.

What is really so big about Dynamos that we dare call it a big club? Is it the seven million fans that have no formal affiliation to the club, thus making that claim unverifiable?

Is Dynamos big because it has 21 league titles but no cabinet in which to showcase the trophies?

Is Dynamos a big club because it turned 50 in 2013?

I remember buying flags and team regalia that pointed to 50-year celebrations at the end of 2013. But is this not the end of 2014? Did I miss the party?

Maybe it took place at the Dynamos House . . . oh Dynamos does not have a house. It rents an office at the National Sports Stadium with thousands of dollars in arrears.

Maybe we will celebrate when the team travels to one of its scheduled CAF Champions League matches in 2015. Right? No.

Why? Dynamos are not participating in that tournament because there is no money. But is Dynamos not a big club?

I look at the team’s board and wonder what exactly goes on in their minds.

Nicknamed Magitare because of his talent with the guitar, Bernard Marriot holds on to Dynamos as selfishly as Tuku holds the guitar.

Marriot is the board chairman, who seems to be strumming a cordless guitar.

Before transforming from chairman to president, Kenias Mubaiwa was quoted as saying:

“We want to avoid a situation where we recycle coaches from one club to the next. If possible we would engage a foreign coach.”

And what happens?

David “ Yogi” Mandigora is the new coach.

President Mubaiwa, you are a joke and the 18-area.coms Personality of the Week.

Va Shagare exits the scene.
